Body image is a huge contributor to dissatisfaction. Our self-esteem and self-image greatly affect how we express ourselves sexually. Some people simply perform and pleasure others, and for others, their awareness of their own desires allows them to create balanced relationships, where reciprocation is essential. These equal relationships are what we should be modeling for our children, and if that isn’t available to us, we should be teaching them the importance of reciprocation. But feeling good about how we look (and yes, sometimes what we weigh) also affects how engaged we are in our relationships. Think about how hard it is to show your naked body to someone if you can’t stand what you see in the mirror. You are more likely to suppress your own needs in an effort to conceal who you are and what you look like. In a good relationship (the ones we want to teach our children about), partners don’t make us feel guilty about our flaws; they love us with them. Moreover, no one wants a partner who is so consumed by negative body image that she cannot enjoy physical intimacy. And if we cannot show ourselves to someone else, are we are ready for involvement in a sexual relationship?
